What Is a Maha Dasha?

A maha dasha is a long planetary period, running anywhere from six to twenty years, during which one planet is treated as the governing influence over the timeline. An antar dasha is a shorter sub-period inside it, governed by a second planet. Together they form a nested timing system, not a description of your personality.

The system in general use is called Vimshottari, and it runs on a cycle of 120 years divided among nine planetary lords in a fixed order. Every person begins life partway through one of those periods and moves through the rest in sequence.

The lengths are not arbitrary and they are not chosen by the astrologer. They are fixed by the system.

The order is always the same and it loops. Whoever your first period belongs to, the next one follows in that sequence. Ketu and Rahu open and sit in the middle of that list despite not being physical bodies at all, which is covered separately in the article on Rahu and Ketu.

What Is an Antar Dasha?

A twenty year block is too coarse to be useful on its own, so each maha dasha is subdivided. Those subdivisions are the antar dashas, sometimes called bhuktis, and they run through the same nine lords in the same order, starting with the lord of the maha dasha itself.

The length of each is proportional. An antar dasha lasts the maha dasha length multiplied by the antar lord's length, divided by 120.

Take Saturn's nineteen year maha dasha. The Mercury antar dasha inside it runs 19 multiplied by 17, divided by 120, which is about 2.69 years, or roughly two years and eight months. The Sun antar dasha inside the same period works out at under a year.

The subdivision does not stop there.

Most practical work stays at the first two or three levels. The deeper divisions exist, but the precision they appear to offer outruns the accuracy of the birth time they are built on, which is the next problem.

How Is Your Dasha Calculated?

From the Moon, and specifically from the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth.

The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras, or lunar mansions, each 13 degrees and 20 minutes wide. Each nakshatra has one of the nine dasha lords assigned to it, so the nine lords repeat three times around the circle.

The choice of the Moon is not decorative. NASA puts the Moon's orbital period at about 27.3 days, which is why a division into 27 segments gives you roughly one nakshatra per day. The system is built on the fastest visible body in the sky, which is what makes it capable of dividing a lifetime finely.

Two things follow from your Moon's position:

• Which planet's period you were born into. The lord of your birth nakshatra is your first maha dasha lord.
• How much of it was left. The Moon does not usually enter a nakshatra at the exact moment of birth. If it was a third of the way through, then a third of that period had already elapsed before you were born, and you begin with the balance. Every subsequent date in your life follows from that balance.

So the whole timeline, potentially eighty or ninety years of it, is anchored to one measurement taken at one moment.

How Do Maha Dasha and Antar Dasha Affect an Individual?

Here is the honest answer, in two parts.

A dasha does not act on you. It is not a force that arrives and does something. It is a timing framework laid over a chart that never changes, indicating which part of that chart is foregrounded during a stretch of years. The chart is the same at fifteen and at fifty. What differs is which portion of it the period brings forward.

And no period produces one shared outcome. Consider the arithmetic. Venus holds twenty of the 120 years, so at any given moment roughly one in six people alive is in a Venus maha dasha. That is well over a billion people, of every age, in every country, in every circumstance. Saturn's nineteen years puts a similar number in a Saturn period right now.

A billion people are not having one experience. Any page telling you what a Venus maha dasha does to a person is describing something that cannot be true of all of them.

What actually varies underneath the label is the whole of the rest of the reading. Where that planet sits in your particular chart. What condition it is in. Which house it governs for you specifically, which changes with your ascendant. Which antar dasha is running inside the major period. What transits are happening at the same time, such as a Saturn transit around your natal Moon. Your age, and what you are actually dealing with.

Those variables are the reading. The name of the period is only the index.

Why Do Two People in the Same Maha Dasha Have Different Years?

Because the same planet governs different territory in different charts.

The houses a planet rules depend on the ascendant, and the ascendant changes roughly every two hours. So two people born on the same day in Indore, a few hours apart, can be in the same maha dasha with that planet governing entirely different areas of life for each of them.

Add placement, condition and the running antar dasha, and the number of possible combinations behind one period name becomes very large. This is the mechanical reason why a lookup table of dasha results cannot work, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion.

Why Birth Time Matters More Here Than Almost Anywhere

This is the practical point most worth taking away.

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, which is roughly half a degree an hour. A nakshatra is 13 degrees and 20 minutes wide, so half a degree is around four percent of one.

What This Page Will Not Tell You

There is no list here of what each maha dasha does, and no table of antar dasha results.

That absence is deliberate. Such a list would have to describe one outcome for a period shared by a billion people, which is not a reading but a horoscope column. It would also have no access to your chart, your ascendant, your birth time accuracy or your situation, and it would frequently contradict what a careful reading of the same chart shows.

The useful version of the question is not “what does a Rahu maha dasha mean”. It is “what does this period mean against my chart, at my age, given what I am deciding”. That has an answer.

Vimshottari is also not the only dasha system. Ashtottari, Yogini and the Jaimini chara dashas exist and are used, with different cycle lengths and different conditions for applying them. Most Indian practice treats Vimshottari as the default, which is why it is the one everyone has heard of.

Dasha Readings in Indore

A dasha reading is mostly date work. Birth time gets confirmed, the ayanamsa and house system get stated, the sequence gets computed properly, and only then does anything get interpreted against the chart.
