Saturn takes about 29.5 years to go once around the Sun. Everything people call Sade Sati comes out of that single number.
Divide the zodiac's twelve signs into that orbit and Saturn spends roughly two and a half years in each sign. Three signs, therefore, take about seven and a half years. In Hindi and Marathi, seven and a half is sade saat, and that is where the name comes from. Nothing mystical is hiding in the arithmetic.
What the phase means for a particular person is a separate question, and this page does not answer it. What this page does cover is what Sade Sati is, how it is worked out, why calculators disagree about the dates, and where the honest limits sit.
What Is Sade Sati in Vedic Astrology?
Sade Sati is the stretch of time when transiting Saturn passes through three consecutive signs: the sign before your natal Moon sign, the Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Because Saturn spends roughly two and a half years in a sign, the full crossing takes about seven and a half years.
Three points are worth separating out, because popular content usually blurs them.
It is a transit, meaning it describes where Saturn is now, not where it was when you were born. It is measured from the Moon, not from the Sun and not from the ascendant. And it is a period, not an event, so it has a start, a long middle and an end rather than a single date on which something happens.
Why Sade Sati Runs for Seven and a Half Years
NASA's figures put Saturn's revolution period at about 29.46 Earth years, and its overview of the planet describes the same slow orbit that made ancient observers treat Saturn as the slowest of the visible planets.
Divide 29.46 by twelve. You get roughly 2.45 years per sign. Multiply by three and you get about 7.4 years, which the tradition rounds to seven and a half.
That is the whole derivation. A reader who understands this paragraph understands the mechanism better than most people who have been worrying about the phase for years.
| Phase | Where Saturn is transiting | Approximate duration |
|---|---|---|
| First phase | The sign before your natal Moon sign, counted as the twelfth from the Moon | About 2.5 years |
| Second phase | Your natal Moon sign itself | About 2.5 years |
| Third phase | The sign after your natal Moon sign, counted as the second from the Moon | About 2.5 years |
Different schools attach different names to these three phases, and the naming is not standardised across texts or regions. The structure above is the part everyone agrees on.
Is Sade Sati Calculated From Your Sun Sign or Your Moon Sign?
From your Moon sign, always. This is the single most common error in free Sade Sati checkers, and it produces wrong answers for a large share of people who use them.
Your Moon sign, or janma rashi, is the sign the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth. Finding it needs your birth date, your birth time and your birth place, because the Moon changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days and the exact moment of change depends on the calculation. A tool that only asks for your date of birth cannot give you a reliable Moon sign.
There is a second layer to this. Indian astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars, while most Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. The gap between the two is currently around 24 degrees, which is nearly a full sign. So the “star sign” from a magazine and the rashi used for Sade Sati are usually not the same sign at all. The same calculation settings cause the disagreements people notice with Rahu and Ketu across different apps.
Ask any calculator which ayanamsa it uses before trusting its output. Most Indian practice uses Lahiri.
Why Do Sade Sati Dates Differ Between Websites?
Two reasons, and both are technical rather than mysterious.
The first is the ayanamsa setting, as above. A different ayanamsa shifts every sign boundary slightly, which can move the date Saturn is considered to enter a sign.
The second is retrograde motion. Saturn spends part of every year in apparent backward motion against the stars, an effect of the Earth overtaking it rather than any real reversal. When that backward stretch happens near a sign boundary, Saturn can enter a sign, retreat out of it, and enter it again months later. Any single “start date” for the phase is therefore a simplification of a boundary that gets crossed more than once.
This is also why two astrologers can quote you dates that differ by several months without either of them being careless.
How Many Times Does Sade Sati Happen in a Lifetime?
Once every 29.5 years or so, because that is how long Saturn takes to return to the same sign. The arithmetic gives most people two or three occurrences in a normal lifespan, with the phases separated by roughly 22 years of gap.
Someone whose first phase falls in childhood would meet the next one around their early thirties, and a third around their sixties. Those are approximations from the orbital period, not predictions.
There are two related terms that often get confused with the main phase, so it is worth separating them:
- Dhaiyya, sometimes written dhaiya, refers to Saturn transiting the fourth or the eighth sign from your natal Moon. Each lasts about two and a half years, which is what the name refers to.
- Kantak Shani is another term used for Saturn's transit of the fourth from the Moon in several regional traditions, though usage varies and some practitioners apply it differently.
- Saturn return is a Western term for Saturn coming back to the position it held at your birth, which happens around age 29 and again around 58. It is measured from Saturn itself, not from the Moon, so it is a different calculation from Sade Sati even though the two often overlap in time.
Naming conventions here differ between schools and regions. If a previous astrologer used one of these terms with you, the first useful step is establishing which calculation they actually meant.
What This Page Will Not Tell You
It will not tell you what your Sade Sati means, whether yours is running, whether it will be difficult, or what to do about it.
That is a deliberate line, and the reasoning is straightforward. A public page has no access to your birth time, your Moon's exact degree, which dasha is running alongside the transit, or where Saturn sits in your birth chart to begin with. Two people can be in the same phase of the same transit with entirely different charts underneath it.
There are no remedies on this page either. Not because remedies are never discussed in consultation, but because a remedy suggested without seeing a chart is a product recommendation dressed as astrology. Devagya Sutram does not sell gemstones or ritual items, which removes the incentive that shapes most Sade Sati content you will find online.
A reading of your own transit involves work that no article can substitute for:
- Birth time is confirmed first. The Moon changes sign every two and a quarter days, so a wrong or rounded birth time can put the Moon in the neighbouring sign and move the entire seven and a half year window.
- The ayanamsa is stated, not assumed. Sign boundaries shift with the setting, and the dates follow from the boundaries.
- Entry and exit dates are computed including retrograde crossings, rather than quoted from a rounded table.
- The natal chart is read alongside the transit. Saturn's own condition at birth is part of the picture, and it is different for every person.
- The running dasha is mapped against the transit dates. Transits and periods operate together, and reading one without the other gives half an answer.
What Actually Helps During a Difficult Stretch
Some of the most useful things to do during a hard period have nothing to do with astrology, and saying so plainly matters more than any chart detail on this page.
If you are dealing with physical symptoms, see a doctor. Fatigue, sleep disruption and persistent pain are medical questions and a chart reading does not diagnose them. If you are dealing with anxiety, low mood or thoughts you find frightening, speak to a qualified mental health professional. That is not a lesser option than a consultation. In many cases it is the correct one, and a responsible astrologer will say so.
Money pressure needs a chartered accountant or a registered financial adviser. Legal trouble needs a lawyer. Property questions need a structural engineer or a property lawyer depending on the issue.
An astrological consultation can sit alongside all of that. It does not replace any of it.
Sade Sati Consultations in Indore
A consultation on this subject usually starts with correcting the inputs. Birth time gets checked, the Moon sign gets confirmed against the ayanamsa in use, and the transit dates get recomputed properly rather than pulled from a generic table.
If someone has already given you a reading on this phase and left you frightened, bringing that reading to a Vedic astrology consultation in Indore is a reasonable next step. Going through what was said, against a correctly calculated chart, is straightforward work.

Getting Your Own Dates Calculated Properly
The mechanism behind Sade Sati is a slow orbit and a simple count of three signs. The fear attached to it is a separate thing, built up by content that benefits from it. Understanding the calculation removes a surprising amount of that fear on its own.
For the rest, you need your actual chart. Rohit Karla takes consultations in person for clients in Indore, Ujjain, Dewas and Bhopal, and by scheduled phone call for those elsewhere, including Indian families abroad. You can book a consultation here.
Astrological guidance is advisory. It does not replace medical, psychological, legal or financial counsel from a licensed professional. If you are struggling with your mental health, please speak to a qualified professional.
